Sean Thomson

I’m excited to be going into partnership with Graham and the team at the new Coast Skin Clinic. For the last 15 years I’ve worked almost exclusively in the skin cancer detection and treatment field at a central Christchurch clinic. I really don’t want to think about how many “spots” I’ve seen….

Having spent my childhood in the Sumner Redcliffs area and attending the local schools, I studied Medicine at Otago University. This has been a bit of a family trait with my uncle David and grandfather Doug being long term Sumner GP’s. With my initial medical degree, a Diploma in Child Health and Fellowship of the NZ College of GP’s I worked in General Practice. A two-week locum for a friend became a 20 year position.

Early on in this, I was exposed to dermoscopy and skin cancer screening, and this has become my sole area of practice. My formal Skin Cancer training includes an International Dermoscopy Diploma in 2009 (IDD Graz, distinction) and further study at the University of Queensland, gaining a Graduate Certificate in Skin Cancer Medicine.

I have a natural interest and eye for detail. I also have some perfectionist traits, which are a great benefit for my work and thoroughly examining your skin, but maybe not so much for general life!

I’ve always been a keen sports participant having tramped, mountain biked, sailed and kayaked my way around the world. I’ve represented New Zealand in my chosen sport of Canoe Polo and refereed this to a high level, including multiple World Championships and a World Championship Grand Final.

I currently spend my spare time fixing my boat and walking (and walking and walking) my dog. I still live locally with my fabulous wife (proof reader!) and pretty decent son.... and ok dog....
